Basketball is a court-based game that was created in the late 1800s by a Canadian Doctor who used a peach basket and ball to keep his physical education class active with some vigorous exercise on a rainy day in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The aim of the game is to throw the ball through the basket, with different points being awarded depending on where on the court the ball was thrown from; with one, two or three points being scored in relation to how far away you are from the basket.

The game was designed to be played indoors in gymnasiums and was designed to be a tough, physical activity for long winters when outdoor sports are unable to be played.

Basketball clothes have developed over time to include long shorts and light vests which allow lots of airflow over the skin - something that is vital for strenuous exercise indoors to allow the body to cool off whilst sweating and working hard.
